Developer Reference: UUID v4 vs UUID v7 vs NanoID

UUID Version 4

RFC 4122

Purely random 128-bit numbers. Provides maximum entropy and unpredictability. Suitable for security tokens, temporary files, and decoupled distributed systems where insertion order is irrelevant.

UUID Version 7

RFC 9562

Unix millisecond timestamp ordered identifier. Solves B-Tree index page splitting in PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB. Maximizes cache locality and sequential write performance.

NanoID

URL-Safe

Compact 21-character string using a 64-character alphabet. Ideal for short URLs, public object IDs (e.g. Stripe/GitHub style), web sharing, and human-readable links with zero hyphen friction.

100% Client-Side Privacy Guarantee: All identifiers are generated locally via the browser's Web Cryptography API (crypto.getRandomValues). No data or tokens are ever sent to external servers.
