Question 1

Why does confusing 50% markup with 50% margin cost businesses money?

Accepted Answer

If you buy an item for $100 and want a 50% profit margin, you must price it at $200. But if you accidentally apply a 50% markup, you price it at $150. You end up with only a 33.3% margin, under-earning by $50 per unit. When merchant fees and shipping are deducted, you may barely break even.

Question 2

What is Keystoning in retail and wholesale?

Accepted Answer

Keystoning is the traditional retail pricing rule where wholesale price is 50% off MSRP, and the retailer marks it up by 100% to double their money. For example, if a manufacturer produces an item for $25, they sell it wholesale for $50 (100% markup / 50% margin), and the retailer sells it to consumers for $100 (100% markup / 50% margin).

Question 3

How do I calculate Break-Even volume accurately?

Accepted Answer

Divide total monthly fixed costs (rent, salaries, subscriptions) by the Contribution Margin per unit (Price minus Variable Cost). For instance, if fixed overhead is $10,000/month and each product yields $25 contribution margin, you need exactly 400 unit sales per month to reach the break-even point.

Question 4

How do stackable coupons affect total effective discount?

Accepted Answer

Stackable coupons compound sequentially, not additively. For example, a 20% sale followed by an extra 10% coupon results in paying 80% × 90% = 72% of the original price, yielding an effective 28% total discount (rather than 30%).

Question 5

Does this calculator save or transmit my proprietary product pricing data?
