Base58 & Bitcoin Address

Base58 & Bitcoin Address Encoder / Decoder

Encode and decode byte strings to Base58 and Base58Check formats used in Bitcoin, IPFS, Ripple, and Solana. Inspect 4-byte double SHA-256 checksums, verify address integrity, and decode cryptographic public keys entirely in your browser with zero network transmission.

Base58 Alphabet & Cryptographic Specifications

Why Base58 is used across Bitcoin, Solana, Ripple, and IPFS instead of standard Base64 or Hex.

Intentionally Excluded Ambiguous Characters in Bitcoin Base58:
0 (Zero) — Avoids confusion with 'O'
O (Capital O) — Avoids confusion with '0'
I (Capital I) — Avoids confusion with 'l' or '1'
l (Lower l) — Avoids confusion with 'I' or '1'

What is Base58Check encoding?

Base58Check was created by Satoshi Nakamoto for Bitcoin addresses. It prepends a 1-byte version prefix to the payload and appends a 4-byte checksum computed via double SHA-256: SHA256(SHA256(payload))[0..4]. If a user mistypes even a single character in the address, the checksum fails with a 99.99999% probability, preventing accidental loss of funds.

Why does Solana use raw Base58 without checksum?

Solana uses 32-byte Ed25519 public keys formatted directly in raw Base58 (43 to 44 characters). Because the Solana runtime and RPC APIs validate public key geometry and signature verification cryptographically, an embedded double SHA-256 checksum is omitted to save transaction and payload bandwidth.

What is IPFS CIDv0 Base58?

Legacy IPFS Version 0 Content Identifiers (CIDv0) begin with Qm. They are 34-byte multihashes consisting of 0x12 (SHA-256 hash function code), 0x20 (32-byte digest length), followed by the 32-byte SHA-256 hash of the content, encoded in raw Base58.

Is it safe to inspect private keys or wallet seeds here?

Yes. This tool is completely client-side ('use client'). All mathematical conversions, SHA-256 hashes, and Base58 calculations run locally inside your web browser. Zero data is ever sent across the network or stored on any server.
