Quiet Zones (Margins)

Always maintain empty quiet zones on both left and right margins of at least 10 times the narrowest bar width (minimum 6mm). Optical scanners rely on quiet zones to identify start patterns.

High Contrast Ratio

Barcode laser scanners use red 630-670nm diodes. Bars must absorb red light (pure black or dark blue), while backgrounds must reflect red light (white or yellow). Never print red bars on white!

Vector SVG vs Raster PNG

For commercial label printing and packaging dies, always download Vector SVG. SVG scales to 300+ DPI without pixel blur or edge bleed that cause scanner decoding failures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

EAN-13 (13 digits) is the global standard for consumer items sold outside North America. UPC-A (12 digits) is the standard retail barcode in the United States and Canada. Both encode strictly numeric data under GS1 management. Code 128, by contrast, is an alphanumeric industrial format capable of encoding letters, numbers, and symbols, making it ideal for shipping cartons, logistics tracking, and warehouse bins.
